Custom Gaming Desk, Legroom Galore

Display space while seamlessly integrating with the room's design and enhancing.

Background

The old computer desk just wasn't cutting it anymore! Time to upgrade to a computer desk that's sturdy enough for all the electronics you could throw on top of it, provides solid cable management AND offers plenty of legroom.

Getting to work

In order to make the desktop super stable with maximum legroom, I decided to attach the support structures directly to the wall instead of building a traditional 4 leg desk. Because this was going in a room that was purpose-built for gaming, I was comfortable making this desk a permanent fixture in the space. I started by attaching a 2x4 cleat along the length of each wall where the desktop would go. I then picked a spot on each wall to secure some blocking into studs, which would be used to support the angled studs that would hold up the desktop, and attached them using wood glue and pocket screws. Next came the desktop, which was built in two pieces from 3/4" poplar plywood, secured to the angled studs and wall cleats with glue and screws, and finished with 1x2 poplar trim. I added legs in each corner using leftover plywood to ensure the angled studs wouldn't have to bear the entire weight of the desktop.

The Result

A gaming desk that's bomb-proof, comfortable to use, large enough to hold all the wacky junk that gets randomly brought down to 'The Cave' and with enough room to do full chair-spins while celebrating a big dub.
